About Us
We are a meditation community in the Chan (Zen) tradition of Dharma Drum Mountain. As the urban branch of Dharma Drum Retreat Center, we exist to inspire, nurture, and support the practice of meditation in modern life.
Make Chan (Zen) accessible to all
We believe that Chan benefits everyone—regardless of background, beliefs, or aptitude. Our mission is uplift humanity by making meditation accessible to all, providing welcoming spaces and supportive communities where everyone can explore, embody, and benefit from the timeless wisdom of Chan Buddhism.
Inherit the Past
We draw from a vast treasury of Buddhist teachings and practices accumululated over 2,500 years and passed on to us through the Linji and Caodong lineages of Chan.
Adapt to the Present
Our teachers present the Dharma in fresh ways to engage citizens of a modern world. We offer essential truths and guidance in simple, direct language.
Welcoming to All
We are dedicated to creating an inclusive space that welcomes individuals of all cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

A new home in the heart of Manhattan
Our new meditation center is taking shape in the heart of Manhattan. This thoughtfully designed space will serve as a gathering place for workshops, events, and meaningful connections.
Building Something Special
Our space is currently under construction and will be completed in March 2026. But that won't stop us—we're already hosting events and building our new community.
How we came to be
Every community has a story. Ours began with our founder's wish to bring Chan to the heart of Manhattan.
The Seed Was Planted
Dharma Drum Retreat Center (DDRC) is founded in Pine Bush, NY. Master Sheng Yen remarks: "It would be wonderful to have a space in Manhattan."
The Vision Emerges
A small group of volunteers began gathering informally, dreaming of a dedicated space to make Chan accessible to New Yorkers.
Searching for a Home
From uptown to downtown, we explored various neighborhoods. There were challenges and setbacks, but our vision remained clear.
Lease Signed
We secured our location and started meeting with architects to bring our vision to life.
Building Together
Construction began while we continued hosting pop-up events across the city.
Soft Opening
Although our space is still under construction, we are excited to welcome our first visitors and begin building our community.

Sheng Yen (1930–2009)
Buddhist teachings are so wonderful. It’s a pity so few people know of them and so many misunderstand them.
Master Sheng Yen (1930–2009) was one of the most influential Chan (Zen) Buddhist masters of the modern era. His journey took him from a young acolyte in war-torn China to becoming a globally respected spiritual leader, scholar, and peace advocate.
Through his tireless efforts, he founded the Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies and Dharma Drum Mountain, a global Buddhist movement encompassing monasteries, universities, and practice centers across Asia, Europe, and the Americas—leaving a lasting imprint on contemporary Buddhist scholarship and practice.
The people who make it happen
Our dedicated team brings diverse backgrounds and a shared passion for making Chan (Zen) teachings accessible to all.
